Grandson Still In Shock After Seeing Grandad Killed On Road

Krishant Singh has found it difficult trying to find sleep at night after he witnessed his grandfather being run over by a vehicle along Vatukoula, Toko, Tavua, on Saturday evening.
The 12-year-old Toko Sanatan Primary School student was returning home with his grandfather after he witnessed a helicopter land at his school.
“He was hit by this speeding vehicle,” Krishant said.
“It was close and I could not believe that it happened so fast. I was scared and saw his body shaking.
“He is no more and I miss him so much.”
Yesterday Krishant reminisced stories and the advice his grandfather used to give him.
Director Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra confirmed that the tragic incident involved an 80-year-old pedestrian.
The victim was hit by a private vehicle driven by a 43-year-old heavy goods driver of Kavuli, Tavua.
Mr Mishra added the deceased was with his grandson while he attempted to cross the road.
“He was taken to Tavua hospital in a passing vehicle. At Tavua Hospital the doctors tried to revive him, but later the deceased was pronounced dead,” Mr Mishra said.
The deceased is survived by his six children and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral update will be revealed after the post mortem examination results.
Mr Mishra has issued a stern reminder for drivers and pedestrians on their responsibilities at all times to be safe and observe all road rules.
“Drivers must observe and strictly follow the speed limit. Defensive driving techniques. Be observant and alert when driving at all times,” he said. Edited by Susana Tuilau
