More Fijians can expect to benefit from the medical and dental mission by the Loloma Foundation.

Loloma Foundation is a California-based non-profit organisation, whose mission is to support the medical and dental systems in the South Pacific (Fiji and Solomon Islands).

Project co-ordinator Linda Kwasny said the mission was scheduled to arrive on January 27, with a team of 18 dentists and physicians to serve residents of the Northern Yasawas for 10 days.

She said: “Four days, two strong Fijians, and all 34 containers have been deconstructed and repacked for the 2019 medical/dental mission at Navutu Stars in the Yasawas,” Ms Kwasny said.

“We will be returning for the 15th year to Navutu Stars Resort on Yaqeta in the Yasawa’s chain. We are scheduled to arrive on January 27; the 18 dentists and physicians will arrive to serve residents of the Northern Yasawas for 10 days.

“Additionally, a team of general medical specialists will travel daily to set up clinics on other rural islands for the purpose of providing general medical care as well as screening patients as surgical candidates at the Taveuni Hospital in the spring.

“In the last 15 years the foundation has shipped and distributed $32 million worth of medication and medical and dental supplies and equipment to Fiji and the Solomon Islands.”

The project includes:

  • Joint funding (co-financed with village participation) of sustainability projects;
  • Village solarisation;
  • Clean water through catchment and storage tanks;
  • Stocking libraries with children’s and adult books;
  • Building Kindergartens in rural villages;
  • Scholarships for primary and secondary school students; and
  • Village bakery businesses.
  • Our volunteer US physicians and dentists mentored local medical/dental residents from the Fiji School of Dentistry and School of Medicine.
