Manoca Residents On Alert After Landslide

Residents of Manoca Settlement in Nausori are on alert after a landslide on Sunday.
The owners of the house where the landslide occurred, James Kumar said the incident happened at 5pm.
“It was raining heavily and our family were all alert because from a distance we could see soil being washed away,” Mr Kumar said.
“We heard trees crashing down so I rushed out to see the commotion.
“By the time I managed to move my vehicle to a safe place a huge proportion of land near my house was washed away.”
Family members were still recuperating from the impact of the landslide.
“We want to live in peace and in safety not like this where we don’t know if our house might be carried away by a landslide,” Mr Kumar said.
Manoca Settlement committee member and taxi driver Kamal Ali said the landslide was the second one to affect their settlement.
Residents plan to lodge a complaint with the Department of Mineral Resources so an investigation can be conducted to find a solution.
More than 70 households live in the Manoca settlement.
