A total of 537 animals were given shelter in 2018 at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Out of this, there were 292 dogs and puppies and 245 cats and kittens. SPCA had rehomed 316 animals of which were 26 adult cats, 88 kittens, 58 adult dogs and 144 puppies.

These statistics was revealed by co-chair and a life member and past Secretary of the executive Seema Deo. Ms Deo said it was sad to note that many of the other animals succumbed to ill health or were too young to survive on their own.

“SPCA continues to urge members to consider fostering animals to help give them a better chance of survival,” she said.

There are about 270 members at the end of 2018, and the funding SPCA receives is from donors, sponsors and from membership fees.

SPCA’s plans for 2019 is to strengthen their education programme to the public so that they can understand of the work that SPCA does, but also what people can do to make an animal’s life better.

“We also want to focus on cruelty and increase our adoption,” she said.
