Judges Denies Former Head Teacher Bail, Accused Of Rape

High Court judge Justice Riyaz Hamza refused to grant bail for a former head teacher because the offences he allegedly committed were serious.

The former teacher, who stood before Justice Hamza yesterday, is charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse. The accused is charged with one count each of rape and sexual assault, three counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecently annoying any person.

Justice Hamza said Head Teachers have to obey rules, but in this case he had betrayed his trust of care to students.

The alleged offence took place in Naitasiri at the beginning of the school year in 2017 until September.

The complainants in this case are all minors, aged between 12 and 14 years old.

The State did not object to the bail. A trial date has been set from June 3 to 14.

The matter is set to be recalled for pre-trial conference on February 5 in the High Court.
