Basketball Fiji’s men and women teams will try to win gold like they did at the 2007 Pacific Games in Samoa.

Chief operating officer Laisiasa Puamau said they will be having an open trial on February 2 to select their extended squad for the games set for July 6-20 in Apia.

The women are the defending champions while the men settled for silver at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

“In the games held in Samoa in 2007, we both won gold and we are aiming to repeat that,” Puamau said.

“Basketball Fiji will be holding open trials for both the women and men’s team on February 2 at the FMF Gym in Suva.

“A challenge for the sport is gaining access to training or competition venues due to the limited number of basketball facilities available in the country with the Vodafone Arena closed for renovations.

“We are currently working with Fiji Sports Council in securing the FMF Gym for training and competitions in lead up to the Pacific Games.”
