EDITORIAL: Attacks On Our Police Officers Will Not Be Condoned

Again the message from the leadership team at the Fiji Police Force is crystal clear – if you attack their people, they will find you and you should expect to face the full brunt of the law.

The latest incident in Nadi is horrifying, to say the least.

Two police officers while on the job – chased two individuals who were suspected drug peddlers. They were attacked. It almost cost them their lives.

In fact, Police have labelled the two suspects as ‘dangerous’.

The chase was a result of a joint operation between the Namaka and Border Police. They were tipped off about drugs being transported from Wailoaloa Beach.

Like one of those scenes from an action movie, when the two officers arrived at Wailoaloa, the suspects jumped out of the vehicle holding two large parcels and boarded a fibreglass boat moored nearby.

The two police officers pursued the suspects as they waded through waist-deep water.

One of the officers was struck by a wooden oar. The second had to dive for cover as one of the suspects reversed the fibreglass boat in his direction.

The bravery of the officers is commendable. They risked their lives doing their job.
But the fearlessness of the suspects speaks volumes of the kind of thugs Police and our defence personnel have to deal with on a daily basis.

When the two suspects attacked the officers the way they did, it was obvious that they were determined to injure or even kill.

Their goal was to save themselves and the parcels they were carrying.

But not for long – Police are aware of the identity of the two.
Expect to see them in court sooner rather than later.
