The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment, Mahendra Reddy, has begun investigations into the cutting of mahogany trees at Adi Cakobau School, Sawani.

Mr Reddy was asked yesterday whether his ministry was consulted before the trees were cut, to which he said they were not consulted.

“No. There was an emergency situation, I guess that is what we found out,” Mr Reddy said.

“It is a mahogany plantation. The Environment department is now examining the level of harvest that has been done and also if there is an impact on the environment and how it can be rectified.”

It is understood that the ministry issued a stop work notice on Thursday.

“That is the process. When someone raises an issue with us and we find that the process is not being followed we immediately stop the process and investigate,” he said.

“It is easier to examine the situation when there is a stop work notice.”

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary for Forestry Pene Baleinabuli said the Ministry of Forestry was responding to a request that came from the school to cut down trees that were close to the school vicinity which posed as a risk to students and the school.
