Residents of Nasinu have raised their concerns after piles of rubbish, electrical and household items were found thrown in the drains alongside the roads in the area.

When the Fiji Sun team visited Godfrey Road in Nasinu, sofa and electrical items along with plastic bags filled with kitchen wastes were found in the drains.

A resident who wished to be anonymous said the waste and household items thrown into the drains caused blockages during heavy rain.

He said the drains were blocked due to plastic bags filled with rubbish which have not been removed.

“We do not know who is throwing those items in the drains but it is not acceptable.

“The Ministry should impose a harsher fine and prosecute the people caught littering especially in residential areas,” he said.

Another resident of Nasinu, Ashok Kumar said the rubbish piles in his area has decreased but overtime it increased again.

“We have been asking the residents around about the issue but they all have the same sentiments of concern as well. It is very unpleasant to see rubbish lying around the road and overtime it keeps increasing,” Mr Kumar said.

Previously, Permanent Secretary for Environment Joshua Wycliffe had said the provision of waste recycle bins around the country provided an intervention for the public to involve themselves in promoting a clean environment.

Mr Wycliffe said it was hoped the recycle bins would raise awareness, responsibility and accountability in the minds of Fijian citizens.
