Nowadays parents do not have to look for money to pay for their children’s fees and I am a good example because my youngest child is under TELS, says mum.

Sinate Navunisarau has been selling handicraft at the Suva Market for the past 37 years.

Ms Navunisarau said that she had been supporting her six children through her sale of handicraft and grog.

“I started handicraft in 1981. I also have a grog stall,” said the 59-year old, who in lives in Kinoya and is originally from Koro Island.

“I teach my youngest daughter to learn handicraft because it might be useful for her in future.”

Ms Navunisarau said that she remembered when TELS was not available and she had to pay her son’s fee for the first semester at then Fiji School of Medicine, which was $10,000.

“It was difficult for me during that time, but now many children are able to afford education through Government’s initiative,” she said.

“Nowadays parents do not have to look for money to pay for their children’s fee and I am a good example because my youngest child is under TELS.”

She said that one of her son was under the former Fijian Affairs Board scholarship. Her youngest daughter, Rinieta Rasekaseka, 20, is a second-year student at the University of the South Pacific.

Ms Rasekaseka said she was glad to be under TELS and this eased the burden of her mother because she was aging, hence needed to save money for her future.

Ms Rasekaseka is studying Human Resource and Management.

“If it wasn’t for TELS, my mum wouldn’t be able to afford my studies,” she said.

“I am very proud of my mother and she has always been supportive of the decisions I make.”
