Usaia Koroi had set his goal of becoming an engineer and yesterday he could not have been happier as he took the first step towards achieving his tertiary qualification.

The 21-year-old was among the hundreds of first year students attending the University of the South Pacific (USP) orientation at the Laucala Campus on Monday.

Originally from Namulomulo Vugalei, Tailevu, he is pursuing a Bachelor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The former Vunimono High School student had to work his way through high school often taking part time jobs to cater for his school needs.

“I sometimes took on jobs at the supermarkets and would collect money to buy my school bag, stationery and uniform and shoes,” Mr Koroi said.

“We are five siblings and my father is a farmer, but despite the ordeal he has always supported us so I tried my best to be of help in whichever way possible.”

He will be pursuing the four-year degree programme under the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS).

“TELS has really made this possible for me,” Mr Koroi said.

“My two older siblings have also studied at USP and now that they are working they are supporting me as well so things are finally working out for us.

“All I want now is to become an engineer so that I can give my parents a good life because I would not have been here without their sacrifices and hard work.”

The USP Laucala Campus orientations ends tomorrow.
