Fijian Under-20 rugby head coach Kele Leawere is confident of fielding a strong team in the upcoming Oceania and Junior World Cup tournaments.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, the former Flying Fijians lock forward and vice-captain said, he was happy that 58 Suva-based players attended the fitness test at the FMF Gymnasium, Suva.

“Tomorrow we’ll have two more fitness test sessions, one in Sigatoka for the Nadroga and Navosa based- players and later in the afternoon we’ll move to Nadi,” Leawere said.

“Looking at the first session today there has been a good response from the players.

“From here we’ll be able to see which players are able to play in that expected level and that is why we’re making sure these players have the required fitness level.

“After these tests are completed we’ll select the team to represent Fiji at the Oceania U20 Championship where we will play against Japan, New Zealand and Australia.”

Leawere said following that they’ll be heading to the Junior World Cup.

“So straight after these trials we’ll select an extended squad of 50 players and later trim it down to 33.

“I’ve been coaching the under-20 side for the past four years now and our greatest challenge is to improve our rankings and we’ll be facing France who is tier one nation as they won the U20 world cup last year.

‘Everything we do in life we need to put our heart and soul into it and only then it will be made possible and also working hard with an extra yard in making that international standard level.

“Nevertheless, I’m extremely proud of the two former under-20 reps Meli Derenalagi and Vilimoni Botitu doing extremely well in the national 7s side.

“Through their performance they have laid the pathway for the newcomers in camp.”
