Yes We Can, Says Baber

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber is confident of replicating their winning performance from New Zealand during this weekend’s Sydney 7s at the Spotless Stadium in Australia.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Baber confirmed that despite players undergoing some fatigue from last weekend they’re back to their normal preparations in vying for a back-to-back win in Sydney this weekend.

“We’re pretty confident that we’ll repeat what we have just done over the weekend at Hamilton,” Baber said.

“As international athletes if we are able to repeat the performance from last week we’will certainly show our consistency and the level of work we putting in to make it possible to the support we getting from FRU.”

NACUQU, TUIMABA MONITORED

The Welshman also highlighted that Waisea Nacuqu and Aminiasi Tuimaba fell ill shortly after the New Zealand 7s and are currently being monitored if they are fit to play this weekend.

“However, couple of players were a bit sick so we picked it up through fatigue and their lower immune system mainly Waisea Nacuqu and Aminiasi Tuimaba but they trained with us today.

“They’ll do light training in the next couple of days as they will be monitored and if they can’t play then I will obviously make a call and bring the 13th player in the side,” Baber added.

“So we did a lot of work in terms of being in the gym, and stayed out of the training field because of the stress in the physical. But we are back on the field today.

“But all in all we are all okay and there is no major injury and we are currently following the protocols set out and ensuring where they need to get to both physically and mentally.

“As I’ve said to the players everybody has played 6 games last week and we’re not the only team that have gone through the finals and we got to see is in terms of how quickly we manage our processes and get ourselves back to where we need to be as professional players.”
