The Fijian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan was invited to speak to youth leaders from the civil society yesterday.

The interactive session provided an opportunity for the youths to learn more about Fiji’s role at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and also the important role that civil societies have in the implementation of human rights in Fiji.

Ambassador Khan spoke on the importance of promoting coherence between development and human rights of the interdependence of civil and political rights.

She also elaborated on the importance of social economic and cultural rights and the significance of inclusivity and justice in national climate policies and the transformational nature of human rights based development journey both nationally and internationally.

In addition she highlighted the significance of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the Human Rights Council, and of the importance of the roles of civil society and the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission in Fiji’s UPR process.

Fiji is the first Pacific Island Nation elected to the UNHRC, the world’s foremost body in protecting and promoting human rights.

Fiji’s representation to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and its vice presidency on Human Rights Council Bureau will significantly enable Fiji to enhance its global leadership to advance and protect the human rights.
