Speedster Alosio Naduva scored a double in the second half in the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team’s 22-17 Cup quarterfinal victory over defending Sydney 7s champions Australia yesterday.

He entered the field  in the second half when Fiji were trailing 10-17.

Fijian captain Kalione Nasoko said: “We believe in ourselves and we thank God for the win.”

It was a scrappy start for the Fijians in the first half as Australia scored first through Maurice Longbottom, before Terio Tamani levelled the scores for Fiji.

It was unfortunate for playmaker Waisea Nacuqu who sustained an injury in the first half and left the field of play.

Nadroumai, Nadroga native Mesulame Kunavula scored Fiji’s second try at half time which gave the Fijians a 10-5 lead at half time.

Indiscipline creeps in the second half seeing the Fijian side receiving their first yellow card of the tournament.

Kunavula was sent off to the naughty chair after throwing the ball away when Australia was awarded a penalty.

This could have cost the Fijians as Australia took advantage of that scoring two tries and taking a 17‑10 lead.

The skills and knowledge of Olympian Seremaia Tuwai was enormous for the Fijian side causing turnovers at critical times.

With 90 seconds left to play, Fiji’s superman Alosio Naduva allowed his  fans to breathe a sigh of relief scoring two tries at full time.

In other quaterfinal results New Zealand defeated France 28-5, South Africa lost to England 26-5 and USA walloped Spain  38-10.
