The Nasinu Masters are confident of winning the International Veterans tournament that begins on Thursday at Bill McKinlay Park, Auckland.

Team’s president/player, Lawrence Robert, says they expect tough competition but feel the experienced players can carry them through.

“I feel that in the last few tournaments our downfall was injuries sustained during the tournament so this year we have prepared very well and all players are fit,” Robert said.

The annual tournament, organised by the New Zealand Fiji Football Incorporated, attracts some of the best teams from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Nasinu, who last won the competition in 2017, start their 2019 campaign against Rewa on Thursday.

Laced with top former districts players, the team won last year’s Vodafone Southern Veterans League.

“We have a very good set of players which is one reason we are a very successful Masters team but it hasn’t been easy,” Robert said.

“Between 2012 to 2019, we made 8 tours to New Zealand and USA. We do a lot of fundraising in Fiji.

“We are also very thankful to our major sponsor, Sanjay Lal of Carbon Bakehouse NZ. He had been sponsoring accommodation costs, meals and transport during our stay overseas.”

Included in the team are former Nasinu reps Ashwin Chand, Lawrence Robert, Itesh Singh, Binesh Kumar, Yogesh Nair, Kashif Nasibdar, Nitulesh Mali, Henry Nair, Jagindar Singh.

Also in the team are former district reps Akesh Narayan (Navua), Akuila Bulewa (Rewa, Labasa), Intiaz Khan, Vikash Prasad (Suva).
