An 18 year old suspect has been charged with one count of murder and three counts of theft.

He will be produced at the Lautoka Magistrates Court today.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at his home at Malamala Street, Simla, Lautoka, yesterday morning.

Pushp Chandra, believed to be in his 50s, was found dead in his house at about 1.30am yesterday when the younger of his two sons raised the alarm because his father was not answering his mobile phone despite repeated calls.

Mr Chandra, a carpenter, had been living in the top flat of the double-storey home for the past 20 to 25 years.
When the Fiji Sun team visited the residence yesterday morning, his neighbour Arvind Gopal, who lives at the bottom flat, said Mr Chandra’s two sons left the house at 8.30pm and 10.30pm respectively.

He said another man who was working for Mr Chandra was in the house with him, but left at about 11.30pm.
Mr Gopal said at about 1.30am the younger son arrived home.

“I was still drinking grog and his youngest son arrived home and he said ‘I’m calling my dad, but he is not answering the phone’,” he added.

“So, we climbed the steps onto the roof of my bottom flat to look inside.

“We saw items scattered everywhere in the house and Mr Chandra lying in the passage.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said details of the death were still sketchy.
