As parents and teachers we have to put every bit of effort in teaching our children leadership values

We also have an important role to play in helping shape the life of a child says the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar.

She was chief guest, at the Vuda District School’s prefects Induction last week.

Ms Akbar told parents and teachers at the prefects’ induction to coach and be good role models to their children.

“To help them dream big as they will be great leaders or even a minister one day,” Ms Akbar said.

She reminded the 62 newly elected leaders that they had the responsibility of 378 students who would rely on them as catalysts for positive change in the school.

“You are challenged to lead by example and not in words only,” the minister said.

“You have an important role in representing the views of the school and the student body.

“You are responsible to setting and maintaining standard and culture of the school, so be a significant role model.”

For newly inducted head girl of Vuda District School, Vilimaina Tavai, leadership is in her blood.

Vilimaina, felt proud and happy to follow in the line of family members when it came to leadership.

Her mother Asinate Tavai was a prefect and deputy head girl for Lomary Secondary School and her father Jerry Tavai was a head boy of Vuda District School.

And her younger sister was also inducted as the class captain of Year Two on Friday.

Mr Tavai said it was not new to have leaders in the family, and he felt proud his two daughters have kept leadership in the family tradition.

Newly inducted head boy Frederick Nakautoga is privileged to be given the honour to lead students.

He feels confident that teachers have faith in him to lead the student body.
