Athletics Fiji head coach Albert Miller has urged more athletes to compete in their weekly competition to qualify for the 2019 Pacific Games on July 7-20 in Apia, Samoa.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Miller said six athletes have qualified in the first Grand Prix and last weekend’s Trial 2 for the Pacific Games.

“The second trial had more athletes participating compared to the first trial, which is a good sign,” Miller said.

“However, we encourage more athletes to participate in the upcoming Grand Prix and weekly competition that we host.

“After the two-day trials we had four athletes from the field events Shawntell Lockington, Malakai Kaiwalu, Mustafa Fall and Eugene Vollmer who made the qualification in their respective events which were high jump, triple jump, shot put and discuss.

“Also, I’m pleased that our sprint event is looking promising especially for the men’s squad where we had Banuve Tabakaucoro and Petero Veitaqomaki making the qualification time.

“For the women we had Ana Kaloucava qualifying for the 400m hurdles.

“As for the women sprint event Heleina Young is the only female sprint athlete at the moment as we still confirming updates from Younes Bese who is still in the US competing in the indoor track events.

“We have another grand prix organised this weekend and we hope to attrack more participation and be able to get more potential athletes to be part of the final squad for the Pacific Games.”
