Firefighters Contain Raiwasa Supermarket Morning Blaze

Quick action by firefighters managed to contain a fire at the NEWWORLD Supermarket in Shalimar Street, Raiwasa, yesterday morning.
Acting Divisional Fire Officer Central, Iferemi Vesikula said the fire started after 8am and the firefighters were at the scene within seven minutes.
“When we arrived at the scene, the supermarket section was on fire and the workers had evacuated, so we started off with our extinguishing and firefighting operation,” Mr Vesikula said.
Firefighters managed to contain the fire at NEWWORLD Supermarket within 20 minutes as fire trucks from Suva and Valelevu reported to the two emergency calls.
“Together with the Fiji Police Force we will conduct the investigation to determine the cause of the fire”, he said
There were no casualties from within the supermarket.
Investigation is underway before the National Fire Authority can release any further comments.
NEWWORLD Supermarket group director and CEO Anil Patel said that it was presumed that the fire started from the cafeteria.
“Since the Police are still doing their investigation we cannot give an estimate of the costs of the damage at this stage”, Mr Patel said.
The employees of NEWWORLD Supermarket have been redeployed to other NEWWORLD Supermarket outlets yesterday.
