Suva’s Homeless Get Treat From FBC Staff

Close to 35 staff members from the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) took to the streets of Suva to feed the homeless yesterday.
Shammi Lochan Lal, the radio programmes manager for FBC, said the essence and meaning of Valentine’s Day was to give to the less fortunate people. Her staff came out as early as 5.30am to prepare lunch packs and tea for the homeless.
“It has opened our eyes and it got us out of our comfort zones,” she said. “Our staff came here and we cooked; there was a team packing and there was another team driving through the streets of Suva to look for and feed the homeless people.
“Some of these homeless people sleep at Thurston gardens during night time and go back to earning money as shoe shine boys or beg for money.
“We saw a lot of elderly people who needed attention.
“There might be elderly people in families too who might not be on the streets and may not be honoured by their children,” she said.
Her team from FBC fed close to 60 homeless people yesterday.
