Murder Accused, 18, In Remand For Own Safety

An 18-year-old man who allegedly murdered a man at Malamala Street in Simla, Lautoka, on February 9 has been remanded at the Natabua Corrections Facility for his own safety.
Divisional Police Inspector Western Paul Taito, told the court that if the accused was released on bail, his own safety would be compromised and it was a case of public interest.
Avniel Dilesh Mani, of Lomawai, Sigatoka, appeared before Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne in the Lautoka Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
He is charged with the murder of 57-year-old Pushpa Chandra. He is also charged with theft, burglary and driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence.
It is alleged that Mani had committed the crimes between February 8 and February 9 this year. He will appear on February 26 in the High Court in Lautoka.
