Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau has confirmed that there are 26 government ice plants in operation that service Fiji’s coastal and maritime communities.

He said last week they commissioned another two fisheries station including two ice plants on the islands of Moala and Cicia in the Lau Group.

“Ice plants are installed in our maritime islands where there is sufficient water to provide an ease of access to fishermen,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“This development is designed to maximise the revenue by fishermen and minimise the cost of travel to access ice.

He stated that a solar powered freezer costs $70,000 per unit and $20,000 each for installation.
