Fulton Hogan has been given a stop work notice and ordered by the Department of Environment to carry out work at least 500 metres away from a community along Reservoir Road in Suva.

This was after concerns were raised by residents living along this road regarding a toxic smell which was emitted from the burning of a substance.

Minister for Environment Mahendra Reddy said they had informed the company to stop operations in the area because it was very close to the said community.

“There are a number of cases we gave the stop work notice and there was also a case recently in Lami,” Mr Reddy said.

He added that the works which were still being carried out at the Fulton Hogan yard was testing the emissions and this was being done by the World Health Organisation, the company and University of the South Pacific.  Mr Reddy said that the environment assessment was very important.

“We need to have more staff members and strengthen the enforcement part. Monitoring our environment is very important as well,” he said.

“There will be more and more scrutiny in the environment because more development is taking place. People want to invest in Fiji and especially in tourism sector.”

He said that the ministry was more vigilant and there were lessons being learnt from all this.

“People breaking the rules will not get away because some damages are irreversible. We want our environment to be looked after, for our future generation.”
