Judge: You are an Embarrassment

A man was told that he was an embarrassment to his family, community, village and vanua after he was handed his sentence by High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo.

Niko Rokara Levula was convicted for one count each of rape, burglary, and aggravated robbery.

He was jailed to 20 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 19 years.

The sentence was read in absentia as Levula had escaped from lawful custody from the Suva Court House at around 10am on Tuesday morning.

He was later arrested at around 2pm in Jittu Estate.

The incident had occurred on November 15, 2017 in the Central Division.

Levula had broken into the house of the complainant, raped her and stole her properties.

He had covered his face and had a knife in his band and later stabbed the victim on her lips and chin.

The victim was 37-years-old at the time of the offence.

Justice Temo told Levula that he had been eyeing the victim for a while.

“Rape is a serious offence. Serious invasion of a person’s privacy and dignity,” Justice Temo said.

“People’s home must be treated with respect.

“You stabbed and raped her and that was not enough, you robbed her as well.

“Your offending was pre-planned. It was carried out in frightening circumstances.

“The complainant was vulnerable and you showed no no respect for her rights.

“What you did to this woman is of utmost concern to girls and women,” Justice Temo said.

Justice Temo said the sentence will take effect from the date he was arrested.

Levula was given 30 days to appeal to the Fiji Court of Appeal.
