Adarsh Chand, 21, is closer to his dream of a career in aviation rescue services.

The Vunicuicui, Labasa, native was among 11 recruits who graduated from the Aviation Rescue and Firefighting Services basic course in Nadi yesterday.

The course involved ten weeks of training under the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) syllabus.

Mr Chand has fancied aeroplanes ever since he was young.

He vividly remembers watching one that flew over his father’s seven-acres sugar cane farm. Coincidently he was cutting cane with his peers at that time.

“I saw planes when I was cutting cane during my school days so I thought about being part of the aviation industry,” Mr Chand said.

“After high school I got this opportunity. It is a good job, it’s about serving people and it makes my family proud.

“It was good to have support from home. I have never been away from mum and dad, and they were concerned and that motivated me in the challenges I faced.”

Mr Chand used to work for the Vodafone office in Labasa and applied for the aviation fire vacancy, passed the RFL test and took up the course in December 5 last year.

His dad, Parvin Chand, 48, a farmer said, “I am happy to see my son has found this work. We have been very concerned, but he endured in his career.

Eight of the recruits will be based at Nausori International Airport, one in La- basa and two in Nadi.
