Leadership is an honour that will require sacrifices.

This was the message relayed yesterday by the Minister for Defence, National Security and Foreign Affairs, Inia Seruiratu, to the 179 school prefects of Natabua High School in Lautoka during the school’s prefects investiture ceremony yesterday.

Mr Seruiratu told the prefects that their selection as leaders came from years of toil and consistent focus on harnessing their leadership abilities.

“Today (yesterday) is only another step forward in a moulding process that is intended to make you good citizens and become better leaders and role models, tomorrow and into the future,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“Leadership is about bringing positive changes, to individuals and to the organisation.

This is the challenge that lies ahead of you as student leaders.

Make no mistake, leadership is not a leisure it is an honour that will require sacrifices.”

He said popularity and respect were two key elements he frequently emphasised on.

“You can be popular, but you will lose the respect of others and I hope you will be leaders who will be respected because you stand on principles of leadership,” he said.

“One of the biggest challenges of leadership is self-leadership. It’s easy to lead others, but it is difficult to lead yourselves and if you are to be an effective, efficient and a good leader in the future, first you need to learn to lead yourselves.”

Mr Seruiratu added Natabua High School was a trend setter in the academic and sporting attainments over the past years.

“This year is your opportunity to raise the stakes and take Natabua High School to new heights. This year you are in control. Make the most of it,” he said.

He wished the school leaders well in the new academic year.
