A woman who allegedly raped her three-year-old daughter was denied bail by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara. She is alleged to have raped her three-year-old daughter between last September and January this year in Samabula.

The woman, 35, also accused two Police officers of harassment and intimidation during her caution interview at the Samabula Police Station.

Through her lawyer, Jiten Reddy, the complaint was lodged in court.

Mr Reddy made the claims while presenting his clients bail application.

He told the court that the two Police officers allegedly mentally tortured his client and made threatening remarks after she wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Police on February 6.

Mr Reddy alleged that the Police did not do a thorough investigation and was unfair with their investigations.

His said his client had told the Police to also investigate her husband, but they ignored her.

Police prosecutor Constable Sitiveni Baleitaveuni strongly objected to the bail on the grounds that the accused was the mother

of the complainant, the complainant was three-years-old, it was an indictable offence and that there was a high chance that the accused would interfere with the prosecution witness.

Magistrate Wickramasekara agreed to these grounds and denied bail.

The accused was remanded to the Suva Women’s Remand Centre. The case was transferred to the High Court in Suva for mention on March 12.
