The People’s Republic of China is committed to upholding long-term peace, stability and prosperity with Asia-Pacific countries.

These were the sentiments of the Vice President of the China Public Diplomacy Association Hu Zhengyue on Wednesday at the opening of this year’s China International Press Communication Centre Programme.

While addressing diplomats and 50 journalists from 49 African and Asia-Pacific countries Mr Hu said China cherished the friendship and momentum of mutually beneficial co-operation with its foreign counterparts.

“For the journalists from Asia-Pacific countries present here today, we are connected by borderlines or seas,” Mr Hu said.

“We are good neighbours, good partners and good friends. We are all upholders and contributors of long-term peace, stability and prosperity of the region.”

He stated that China would continue its commitment in promoting regional cooperation and implementing the Belt and Road initiative that features consultation, contribution and shared benefits.

Broadcast media GB Times reported that according to official figures released by China’s Ministry of Commerce last month, Chinese companies’ non-financial direct investment in 56 counties participating in the Belt and Road initiative stood at US$15.65 billion (F$33.16 billion) in 2018, and increase of 8.9 per cent compared to the previous year.

Mr Hu added that the Chinese diplomacy association would continue to serve as a bridge that connects people’s hearts and civil societies.

He also stressed the importance of the media in connecting people from different countries to enable them to understand and communicate with each other.

“You shoulder an important responsibility of introducing facts and facilitate understanding and friendly exchange between people of your own country and other countries,” he said.

“I believe after 10 months of exchange, you will have an in-depth understanding about China’s situation.”

“I hope you can use your pen and camera to record what you have heard and seen in China, deliver objective messages, promote peace and friendship, facilitate win-win cooperation and introduce China in a comprehensive, real and three-dimensional way.”

During the duration of the programme, journalists will interview and report on domestic and diplomatic sessions in China like the BOAO Forum for Asia Annual Conference between March 26-29, 2019 and the second Belt and Road Forum in April.

This year’s participating Pacific Island countries are Fiji and Tonga.
