Dates Set For Kamlesh Arya’s Trial

The trial of former diplomat and Registrar of the University of Fiji Kamlesh Arya will run from April 15 to 30 in the High Court in Suva before Justice Riyaz Hamza. The pre-trial conference is on March 27.
Arya is facing one count each of abuse of office and general dishonesty causing a loss.
It is alleged that between January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2014 at Suva in the Central Division while being employed in the Public Service as the Registrar at the University of Fiji, and while acting as the School Manager for Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School, did arbitrary acts for gain in abuse of the authority of his office, namely authorised loan amounting $116, 500 from the Free Education Grant provided by the Ministry of Education to the said Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School, which was prejudicial to the rights of the said Ministry of Education and Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School.
Arya’s defence team will be led by Queen’s Counsel Gregory Woods assisted by Vijay Maharaj. Representing Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption is lawyer Sam Savumiramira.
