Social Media Should Be Used Responsibly

It is the responsibility of every social media user to reflect on how they are utilising that medium says Fiji Women’s Rights Movement Programme Director Kaushal Sharma.

Ms Sharma was responding to the increasing criticism directed towards Minister for Education Rosy Akbar and her daughters on social media regarding her estranged husband.

The Minister has already addressed the issue publicly; however social media trolls have not let the matter rest.

Speaking on the issue, Ms Kaushal said incidents like these were a reflection on how social media was being used and for what purposes.

“Social media is a potential tool for doing good, for creating empowerment and advocacy,” Ms Sharma said.

“So why not focus more on using it in a more productive way rather than using it in a derogatory manner and that goes for everyone.

“In my personal opinion, social media has the potential to be used in a way that does good in the society, it can contribute so much to society and that is the way we should be using it.”
