Three households of Narere, Nasinu have been left homeless after their house containing three flats was razed in an afternoon fire yesterday.

One tenant, Ana Maivalenisau, 24, was in a state of shock when she saw the house in flames around 12.15pm.

Her 11-month-old baby was in the house but was saved through quick action.

She had left her baby Adi Makereta Rabukawaqa under the care of her cousin because she had to go to the hospital.

“I had left my daughter and my younger brother there with my cousin sister because I had to go to the hospital,” Ms Maivalenisau said.

“I came back and was having a chat with my cousin when I smelled something was burning.

“My brother called out for me and I saw the fire from the ceiling.

“I ran into the room and got hold of my baby and little brother to get them out of the house.

“The ceiling was on fire and there was a mattress adjacent to the wall of the ceiling where the fire was coming from.

“I quickly picked my daughter who was sitting by the mattress and ran outside.

“With the assistance of my cousin sister we called other tenants who reside in the other flats.

“Within minutes the house was burned and the ceilings dropped. With the help of another neighbour, we called the Police to get the assistance of fire brigade.

“I was really concerned about everyone and I thank God no one was hurt,” Ms Maivalenisau said.

The National Fire Authority is investigating the cause of the fire and will make a statement today.
