A heavy downpour resulted in flooding in some areas of Lautoka yesterday afternoon.

Residents of Tore Seaside Road, past Lautoka City towards Ba, had to move their belongings to higher ground. Sundressan, a resident of the area for 10 years said it was a common problem whenever there was heavy rain.

“A culvert in the drain on the other side of Kings Road gets blocked and that’s why our area gets flooded,” he said.

“It’s a big problem for us when there is heavy rain for a long time just like today (yesterday).

“Water enters my house if there is heavy rain for a few hours and we have to move things up.”

Mr Sundressan was waiting for the water level to recede before he could drive through to reach home yesterday. Navin Nadan, another resident of the area, said his family had to move household items to higher ground because water had started entering his house.

Mr Nadan was about to finish work at 5pm when he was alerted about the flooding by his wife.

Apart from Seaside Road, some other roads in the Lovu area were also flooded, resulting in people being stranded.

The residents have urged the authorities to look into the problems they have been facing for a long time.
