The Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors side are focussed on retaining the 2019 Pacific Rugby Challenge but won’t take any team lightly, says captain Frank Lomani.

The Warriors open their campaign against Tonga A at 5pm today at Suva’s ANZ Stadium, in what is expected to be an absorbing match between the islanders.

The Fijians hammered the Tongans 57-7 in last year’s reverse fixture, but Tongan captain Liueli Simote believes it won’t be so one-sided in 2019.

“We are going for the win against Fiji,” Simote said.

“The boys are feeling good and we are eager to play the Fijians in their home turf.

“We will see what happens on the pitch.

“This tournament is good for World Cup preparation also. We are expecting a tough and physical game but we won’t be backing down from it.”

Lomani is similarly expecting physical contest against the Tongans, but says the team has been preparing well for it.

“I think we have prepared well over the last three weeks to play against these physical team,” he said.

“There’s no team that won’t be competitive – everyone wants to win – so we will take each match as it comes.

“Everyone is also aware that the door for the squad to the World Cup is still open so we need to play well together as a squad and there will be opportunities to get in.”

Lomani, who has been named at halfback today, also revealed a bit of the Warriors’ game plan against Tonga A.

“Every time Tonga comes, it’s always a physical game.

“We’ve beaten them the last two times but that’s no reason to take them lightly,” Lomani said.

“We have fast players out wide and we will use them.

“We will play the game at our own pace and in a style Fijian rugby is renowned for.

“To the fans, come out and witness what these young guns are capable of.

“We are a good team with lots of talented players and I don’t think the fans should miss this opportunity to watch us.”
