Samoan 7s coach Sir Gordon Tietjens is wary of their pool opponents in this weekend’s Canada 7s in Vancouver.

The Samoans reached the Cup final of the USA 7s in Las Vegas where they went down to the host nation.

Going into the weekend, they are in Pool B alongside Olympic champions Fiji, Kenya and host Canada.

“Another tough pool: first game (against) Canada in Canada, you know?” Sir Gordon said.

“They always lift themselves for their crowd and of course our game against Canada (in Las Vegas) was very very close, it went right down to the wire.

“And that’s our first game – we’ve got to get off to a good start- and then we’ve got Kenya and Fiji so no easy games but that’s the challenge for us: can we back up in another tournament with a good tournament.”

The no-nonsense coach has begun working on his players to ensure they are focused on the task ahead.

NEW- LOOK FIJIAN SIDE?

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber is expected to name a young 13-member squad for this weekend’s competition.

The Fijians have lost key playmaker Waisea Nacuqu to a fractured collarbone while winger Aminiasi Tuimaba faces a three-match ban.

This could see robust Namosi winger Asaeli Tuivoka making his series debut while Terio Tamani is given the responsibility at playmaker along with Vilimoni Botitu.

In the forwards, Baber is expected to retain captain Kalione Nasoko, Mesulame Kunavula, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Meli Derenalagi, Josua Vakuriniabili and Paula Dranisinukula.

However, rookies Isoa Tabu and Batinisavu Uluiyata could force their way into the team.
