Almost 80 per cent of the market vendors around the Pacific are women.

This was revealed by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, during a re-engagement with the wheelbarrow association at the Suva Market to mark the International Women’s Day 2019 yesterday.

She said the association was an initiative of the ministry under the leadership of the then minister, the late Adi Laufitu Malani.

“It was an opportunity to work with 20 members at that time to empower them in their wheelbarrow business at the Suva Mar- ket,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.

“That membership has grown to 100 members today and we thank them for agreeing to promote IWD today and to further engage with us on gender sensitisation
programmes.

“The wheelbarrow association poses a unique opportunity for enhanced collaboration geared towards a safer market space for women not only as vendors, but also as customers.
“I’m encouraged by the eager- ness of the members of the association to re-engage with the ministry on gender issues.”
