Poama Mitchell is following in his mother’s footsteps as a head prefect of Bucalevu Secondary School on Taveuni Island.

And the 18-year-old Qamea islander is proud to be the head boy.

Poama said he was confident to be getting the position because his mother was once the head girl of the school and prepared him well.

“I would like to thank the almighty God, parents, friends and teachers for their support,” Poama said.

“This is the biggest achievement of my life and my aim is to be the best overall leader in the school.”

Aspiring to become a civil engineer, he said although he came from a poor family background, there was nothing to stop him achieving his goal.

“If one has confidence in oneself, he or she can achieve anything in life,” Poama said.

Meanwhile, the newly-inducted head girl, Lynett Stolz, 17, of Matei, Taveuni Island, said she was shocked to be given the nod by teachers.

“When I entered Year 13 in 2019 my aim was to study hard because I want to get a scholarship to pursue an aircraft engineering course,” Lynett said.

“I didn’t realise that God will be too kind to grant my deepest desire to be the head girl.

“I thank everyone who supported me, especially my parents.

“Being the head girl will mean being responsible and also accountable for every action I do.”
