Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel is the first Fijian to be elected as a FIFA Council member.

The appointment was made during the OFC Extraordinary Congress at the Sky City Grand Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand yesterday.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said this was a proud moment for Fiji and Patel.

“It is the main decision-making body of the organization,” Yusuf said.

“Its members are elected during the FIFA Congress. The council is a non-executive, supervisory and strategic body that sets the vision for FIFA and global football.

“This is a major achievement for football in Fiji and around the region and above all major achievement for our country being first Fijian sitting at this high ranked position as a FIFA Council member.

“He will continue to be Fiji FA president and member of FIFA Council comprising of 38 members.”

OFC New Boss

Meanwhile, Vanuatu’s Lambert Maltock was unanimously elected president of OFC for the next four years.

He was first elected to the role on an interim basis last June following the resignation of Papua New Guinea’s David Chung. He will be joined by New Zealand’s Johanna Wood and Patel on the 37-member FIFA Council.

Infantino: Oceania’s spot in CWC

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has guaranteed a place for Oceania in an expanded Club World Cup in Auckland yesterday.

The Fifa Council is set to consider a new format for the Club World Cup when it meets in Miami next week, with Infantino backing plans to expand it to 24 teams and hold it every four years in place of the Confederations Cup.
