We Want More People To Own Homes: A-G

We want more people to own their own homes. This was the statement made by the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to Lautoka residents during the Budget Consultation session at the Sugar Cane Growers Council building in Lautoka yesterday.

He said the rate of home ownership in the country was low.

“This is very important to us to increase the rate of home ownership, the rate of home ownership in Fiji is very low,” he said.

“We want more people to own their own homes, secure land titles so in that way when people have their own properties, have their own assets they don’t go to money lenders, they build their own homes, that’s very important for us to do.”

Traffic issue

Also during the Budget Consultation with Lautoka residents, Gedion Rao of Saweni, who is a community worker for the Bethel Full Gospel Church of Fiji in Natabua, Lautoka, raised an issue. He informed Mr Sayed-Khaiyum about the difficulty of getting into the Natabua area because of traffic.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded saying that the design work for the four lane road from Lautoka to Nadi had been done up. As a result, the issue of traffic would be eased once works were completed.

“We announced in the budget that we are going to start a four lane road from Lautoka to Nadi so the design work has already been done, has already been worked upon so in that design work that Natabua roundabout area will be fixed up,” he said.

“People think that doing a four lane road is easy and a lot of people don’t realise as when we are doing this four lane road, we are building it to climate resilience standards.”
