The opening of a new poultry shed on Saturday at Coqeloa, Labasa is a classic example of perseverance and commitment.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture Viam Pillay while officiating at the project funded by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Food Security Programme heaped praise on “Meena’s Poultry”.

He said the poultry sector played an important role in economic growth in Fiji.

The sector has grown at a rapid rate in the recent decade that has led to Fiji being self efficient in production of edible eggs.

The Government through the Ministry of Agriculture plan to improve livelihoods and standard of living for all Fijians.

It encourages women and youths involvement in the agriculture sector.

For the Coqeloa project, the Ministry of Agriculture approved a total sum of about $42,000 for the purchase of hardware materials for construction of 35 X 50ft poultry shed, 10 A frame cages, 900 day-old chicks, purchase of feed, feeders, drinkers and water tank.

“The Ministry of Agriculture’s intervention will result in an increase in Meena’s Poultry production capacity by 16,390 dozen eggs and subsequently an increase farm income,” said the Assistant Minister for Agriculture.

“The farm will provide employment to locals in this area and also contribute to their livelihoods. Ultimately the farm will also provide food and nutrition security for families around in
Vanua Levu.

“The active participation for ordinary Fijians in any economic activity drives our economy.

“I would like to thank Meena and her family for their hard work and perseverance which led to her success and on behalf of the Government I wish her all the best in her future endeavours,” Mr Pillay added.

Poultry owner Meena Goundar was also praised by the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar for her achievements.

Ms Goundar was the recipient of the 52nd Fiji Development Bank National Small and Medium (SME) Award.

“Meena is an example I would like all women to follow and take a cue from,” Ms Bhatnagar said.
