Editorial: Let’s Stem The Abuse Of Children

Many children in Fiji are now becoming the target for sexual abuse, assaults and the peddling of drugs.

Most of these assailants are close family members.

What is becoming of society where Fiji was once “the way the world should be”.

One only has to look around in their own neighborhood to see how respect for one another, especially the elderly, has eroded.

Attacks on children and indiscriminate physical assaults on children can lead to problems of attention and learning disorders to severe organic brain syndromes, if not death.

But the heart wrenching part to this nightmare of abuse on children is the state of the child and in some cases the tragic The trauma left be in most cases become the defining factor in shaping that child’s life.

And in most cases seeing that child become an abusive person during adulthood.

Studies have shown that children who are abused and neglected are at high-risk of following the footsteps of their biological parents, if they live through the abuse.

Fijians must stem this abuse and people need to become more proactive in reporting abuse on children, even if it is happening in your own family.

You may not realise it, but one day the person you are trying to hide may turn around and do it to your little sister or brother or your child.

These people need to be brought before the courts and face the consequences.

Our children are our future and we need to make sure that they enjoy life.

For the moment, let us light a candle and say a prayer for all children who continue to be victims of abuse.
