A Fijian delegation led by Environment Permanent Secretary Joshua Wycliffe are counting their lucky stars after they boarded a flight which took off just before the ill- fated Ethiopian Airline ET302.

ET302 crashed, killing all 157 people on board yesterday.

Mr Wycliffe speaking to the Fiji Sun while attending the 4th United Nations Assembly (Environment) in Nairobi in Kenya recalled how the Fijian delegation boarded another Ethiopian Airline ET 306.

Part of the delegation included counsellor from the Fijian embassy in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia Ropate Cabealawa, director of environment Sandeep Singh, senior environment officers Sainimil Bulai and Yogesh Gounder.

Mr Wycliffe said they were “all safe by God’s grace”.

Mr Cabealawa had flown in  ET302 to arrive into Kenya for the assembly. In a post he put on Facebook soon after news of the crash broke, he said:

“The news sent chills down my spine and thousands of people attending the 4th United Nations Assembly at the United Nations in Nairobi.

He said it was the very plane that brought them from Addis Ababa to Nairobi last week and this week.

“Addis Ababa International Airport and Ethiopia Airlines are the international airport and centre that thousands of people flying into and out of the African continent stopover for a breather before flying onto their next destination.

As a Fijian diplomat living and working in Addis Ababa, all my travels are conducted through the Addis Ababa International Airport and via Ethiopia Airlines.

“The airplane that crashed this morning was the very one that brought me to Nairobi last week.”
