A Nausori man who is alleged to have caused the death of a 23-year-old man last Sunday morning has been remanded in custody by the Nausori Magistrates Court.

Aporosa Robaigau appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne yesterday.

He is charged with one count each of dangerous driving occasioning death, one count of failure to comply with requirements after an accident and one count of driving a motor vehicle without a valid licence.

The vehicle driven by the accused is alleged to have hit the victim along the Lodoni Road in Tailevu at around 4am on Sunday and Robaigau allegedly failed to stop or report the matter to Police.

A call was received at the Korovou Police Station after the victim from Burerua Village was found lying motionless on the side of the road a few hours later.

Information provided by a member of the public who noticed the damage on the accused’s vehicle led to his arrest.

Police prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the case was of a high public interest, the pedestrian died, the accused failed to stop the vehicle after the accident and there were full admissions in the caution interview.

Magistrate Somaratne refused the oral bail application made by Legal Aid lawyer and adjourned the matter for plea to March 28
