New Acting Vice Chancellor Of University of Fiji

The University of Fiji will endeavour to cultivate resilience in our teachers and students, as well as in the larger community.

We believe we can achieve this in our teaching, research, scholarship and governance collectively by implementing the principles of shared governance.

These were the sentiments of the newly appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, Professor Subramani.

Professor Subramani met with the University Council last Saturday at their Samabula Campus where he was appointed.

He comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience since he has served as a professor at all three universities in Fiji. He played various roles as Dean, Pro Vice Chancellor and now as Acting Vice Chancellor.

He also has been a visiting professor to many universities.

In year 2000, Professor Subramani was part of the Fiji Education Commission; and is well informed and aware of the educational issues in the country.

In the University of Fiji, he will be Professor in Literature and Language in the School of Humanities.

Professor Subramani is well known as a distinguished writer and literary scholar, and is the author of many seminal books written both in English and Hindi.

His recent books are the “Wild Flowers (2017) and “Fiji Maa; Mother of a Thousand (2018).

Through his writing he has been a recipient of National and International awards.

Professor Subramani took over from the former Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Narendra Reddy.

With the support of all stakeholders, he is expected to give fresh academic and intellectual direction to the university.

The Chair of the Council of the University of Fiji and Pro Chancellor, Anil Tikaram said in a statement that Professor Subramani was appointed the Acting Vice Chancellor to take over duties from the former Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Narendra Reddy who is on medical leave.

The Council has entrusted Professor Subramani with the responsibility of reviewing decisions made earlier on Senior Management appointments and also review and make recommendations on the renewal of staff contracts. Professor Subramani will hold office until the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor.
