The Commission on the Status of Women pro­vides a great opportunity to raise our voice on the issues and successes faced by Fijian women back at home and at the same time learn from other na­tions with the mutual goal of achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mer­eseini Vuniwaqa at the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.

The Fijian delegation which is headed by the Minster in­cludes the Permanent Secre­tary, the Director for Women, two support staff and also Fi­ji’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Satyen­dra Prasad and the First Secre­tary Gene Bai.

The delegation will partici­pate in a 2-week long meeting accompanied by side events and bilateral meetings with sister countries.

The second week will involve negotiations by member states on the outcome document for this session.

The CSW comprises of mem­ber states and inter-govern­mental bodies that advocate for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

It was established in 1946 and had its first ever sitting was from February 10-24 in 1947.
