A Lautoka City Council employee has been terminated from work for theft of council funds.

Council chief executive officer, Jone Nakauvadra, confirmed this to the Fiji Sun yesterday following queries.

Mr Nakauvadra said the council had concluded investigations and forwarded the report to the the Ministry of Local Government.

He said the amount involved was $10,000.

Asked whether the matter had been reported to Police, he said the terminated employee has been given three months to pay the money back to the council.

“If he doesn’t pay then we will report the matter to Police,” he said.

On what the council would do to prevent such thefts in future, he said: “We will engage an auditor to come and check the council’s accounts.

“We will recruit an internal auditor and we are just waiting for the ministry’s approval for it,” he said.

The terminated employee was working in the council’s parking meter section.

It is understood that he issued monthly parking meter tickets to vehicle owners but did not give them receipts and pocketed the money.
