The Samoan A rugby team got a big boost when Manu Samoa head coach Steve Jackson was present during their training session at Albert Park, Suva yesterday.

Speaking to SUNsports, Jackson said they are bringing in a new team where they are developing their young players.

“Most of these boys stay in the island and for some of them they’re flying in the plane for the first time and have been learning a lot,” the former Maori All Blacks representative said.

He singled out that Samoa A hooker and captain Afa Aiono as a prospect for the Manu Samoa national side.

“Afa is a prospect and has the experience as he has played for the Samoa sevens team as well but there are things to improve on and develop as a team.”

Jackson said he’s going to be keeping an eye on the Samoa A players during Saturday’s World Rugby Pacific Challenge clash against the Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

“We’re working on our squad for the PNC (Pacific Nations Cup) and the World Cup but we’ll see its shape and take it from there,” he said.

Looking at the Rugby World Cup, Jackson says, they are in a strong pool where they face Ireland, Scotland, Japan and Russia.

“We’re happy about our pool and the calibre of opponents we’re going to face. The World Cup is a different level so we have to be ready,” he added.
