The Nadi Town Council has responded to unsatisfactory remarks aired by a disgruntled Namaka Market vendor.

Nadi Special Administrator Robin Ali confirmed the issues of parking arose as stage two projects were underway and he assured market vendors of assistance.

He also urged the vendors to bear with the council because once the project was completed all problems would be solved.

“I heard about the issues and concerns that vendors have raised and we will address them,” Mr Ali said.

“We are doing the best for the vendors.”

Market vendor and Farmboy director  Kamlesh Prasad expressed his dissatisfaction of the newly constructed market.

In a letter obtained by Fiji Sun, he wrote to the Minister for Local Government requesting an urgent meeting to resolve issues affecting vendors.

Mr Prasad claimed vendors were running at a loss in the new Namaka Market because their parking space was limited and uneconomical.

He claimed some vendors were not given representation in the Namaka Market Vendors Association, even though they were paying fees directly to the council.

He said some vendors wanted representation on the council, which was not listening to them.

“We, as ratepayers, are suffering. If we don’t get attention then vendors might go back and sell on the roadside,” he said.

“It is hard getting customers, but very easy to lose them because the customers don’t want inconvenience while shopping or they will find an alternative place for shopping.”

Mr Ali said the situation at the market would be closely monitored and any issues raised would be addressed promptly.
