Lone wolf attacks

Sameer Kasim, Vancouver BC, Canada

From Dylan Roof in South Carolina to Anders Breivik in Norway to Alexandre Bissonette in Quebec to Robert Bowers in Pittsburgh to the latest assault in Christchurch, a picture emerges of just how destructive some impressionable and attention-seeking white males can get.

Born into the “right race” in organised western countries with a sense of entitlement, losing white privilege, having to compete and giving up space can lead to deadly consequences.

Breivik snuffed the life out of dozens of teens attending a youth summer excursion of the ruling party a short boat ride away from the mainland.

His meticulous planning would have you believe those kids were formulating their government’s policy on immigration!

While not being on the radar of intelligence agencies, these hard-to-predict lone wolf type attackers do not completely manage to cover their tracks, reportedly contributing to white supremacist websites.

Part of the reason they manage to give dragnets the slip is because those same western governments’ efforts are hardly coordinated and lackadaisical in deploying resources to actively tackle this sort of scourge, so long as these groups do not threaten or undermine the writ of the State.

Attacking visible minorities is not the same thing.

It pays electoral dividends to keep the heat on the “other the known unknown” as it were.

The atmosphere itself is vitiated by not so subtle dog-whistle campaigns and other forms of overt racism.

This xenophobia is peddled freely in the out of control social media and not only that, Muslim-baiting politicians recklessly, over a period of time cast them as the other even in mainstream media, normalising abuse in regular discourse under the cover of free speech so that many have become inured to it.

Amidst the gloom, the compassion and love shown by NZ PM Jacinda Ardern and senior officials in reaching out to the Muslim survivors and their families was matched by the genuine outpouring of grief from all walks of NZ life like they had lost their own.

“They are us,” she said with steely resolve instead of the usual and well-rehearsed “our thoughts and prayers are with the families” that we have come to expect from elected officials.

The heart weeps – not just for the lives brutally cut short and live streaming of the grisly act – but for a plucky country, peaceful, stable and generally welcoming, willing to chart its own independent course in foreign policy as far back as Lange denying US nuclear capable warships from NZ waters in spite of ANZUS.

New Zealand is appreciated the world over. Just like Canada is or for that matter Fiji. The mind boggles.

Gutless talk

Tukai Lagonilakeba, Namaka, Nadi

For donkey’s years the SVT (Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei) and SDL (Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua) have had their Land Buyback policy as claimed by SODELPA MP Ro Filipe Tuisawau, but may I ask him to reveal how many of those lands have been returned to the iTaukei landowners during Sitiveni Rabuka and Laisenia Qarase’s tenure.

Can he also reveal how much iTaukei land was alienated and converted to freehold during their tenure? Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu should be able to assist Tauvu Filipe in all of the above.

Our Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama should be commended for his foresight, political will, vision and bravery for returning those many land parcels which Rabuka and Qarase could not implement for reasons known only to them, but where was Ro Filipe all that time?

The FijiFirst government and leadership is determined to implement the Land Claims Tribunal to assist any Fijian who wishes to register their land claims and complaints for free. Such a gutless bunch.
