Man Charged With Rape Of Two Boys Further Remanded

The son of a pastor from a church in Nasinu, who is facing rape charges, has been further remanded in custody.

The accused appeared before High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar on Tuesday March 20.

The man is charged with three counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape and three counts of sexual assault.

It is alleged that in 2017, the accused allegedly raped two boys in Nasinu.

The complainants in the matter were 14 and 15 years of age at the time of the alleged incidents.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Swastika Sharma told the court that the accused and the two boys attended the same church at the time of the offence.

Ms Sharma had objected to bail and told the court that before the accused was charged, he and his mother had approached the father of one of the complainants to seek forgiveness to which the complainant’s family declined the request.

Justice Goundar had questioned what the forgiveness was for.

Ms Sharma told the court that the forgiveness was based on what had happened.

The defence lawyer Sokoveti Daunivesi told the court that the accused’s mother had heard about the alleged stories involving her son and that is why the accused, with his mother, had approached the complainant’s father for forgiveness.

Ms Daunivesi also told the court that there was no further attempts made to seek forgiveness.

Justice Goundar will deliver the bail ruling on March 27.
